Ready-to-Use Rust Converter (Plant-Based Formula)

A safe and reliable product made from natural plant-based raw materials. It effectively penetrates dense rust layers ranging from 2–12 mils (50–300 microns) and converts them into a durable protective layer of complex iron compounds.

It smooths damaged surfaces, prevents further corrosion, and improves adhesion and overall quality of subsequent paint and coating applications.

Odorless. Contains no organic solvents or hazardous substances.

APPLICATIONS

Designed for anti-corrosion protection and restoration of all steel surfaces, especially hard-to-reach areas, including:

– Reinforcing steel in concrete structures
– Structural steel in buildings and bridges
– Mines and industrial facilities
– Ship hulls
– Electrical and automotive components
– Industrial equipment
– Interior and exterior pipeline surfaces
– For use prior to applying protective coatings.

SURFACE PREPARATION

Remove flaking and loose rust, scale, old coatings, and dirt from the surface. Degrease if necessary.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

Stir thoroughly before use.Β Apply the converter in a continuous, even coat without runs or missed spots using a brush, roller, sponge, or spray equipment.
If spraying, filtration prior to application is recommended.

Application temperature range: +41Β°F to +95Β°F (+5Β°C to +35Β°C). Optimal temperature: +59Β°F to +68Β°F (+15Β°C to +20Β°C). At optimal temperature, the rust conversion process takes up to 2 hours, indicated by the surface turning dark blue. If the rust layer exceeds 6 mils (150 microns), some untreated areas may remain after the first application. In this case, a second coat is recommended.
Avoid excess buildup on horizontal surfaces. If necessary, remove excess material with a damp sponge or cloth. Apply to vertical surfaces from bottom to top. After drying, do not rinse with water. If powdery conversion residues appear, remove them with a dry brush or cloth. Priming and painting should preferably be carried out immediately after the converter has dried. Until the protective coating has fully cured, protect the treated surface from moisture and precipitation.

COVERAGE

Coverage per single application:
87 – 130 sq ft per lb
(actual coverage depends on surface condition and rust thickness)

STORAGE & SAFETY

Store in tightly sealed original container at temperatures between +41Β°F and +95Β°F in a location inaccessible to children. Protect from direct sunlight and heat sources. Do not allow to freeze. When applying by spray, the use of a respirator is recommended.
Clean tools with water after use. Empty containers and fully dried product residues may be disposed of as household waste.

SHELF LIFE 24 months from date of manufacture.

This KOMPOZIT rust converter for metal works well to get rid of rust. We had some metal signs that had rusted because they were never painted and this took the rust right off. After cleaning we were able to finally paint the metal signs. It's easy to use. We used a tray to lay the items in and spray them down.

Effective Rust Treatment That Makes Painting Straightforward

Reviewed on August 3, 2026 Β· on Amazon

This rust converter does exactly what it claims, and the process couldn't be simpler. I gave the rusted surface a once-over with a wire brush to knock off any loose, flaking rust, then brushed the converter straight on. The reaction is immediate β€” you can watch it start turning the rust dark and binding it into the surface right as it makes contact, which is satisfying to see and a good sign it's actually working rather than just sitting on top.I let it dry for a few hours before overcoating with an enamel paint, and it took the paint without any issues. The whole process was easy from start to finish, with very little mess involved β€” no mixing, no rinsing, just brush on and let it work. For anyone dealing with rusted metal that needs to be painted over, this cuts out a lot of the usual prep hassle.

Completely sold on this stuff. The product description doesn't explicitly tell you that you will need a paintbrush to apply it, so I had to make a quick trip to grab one before I could treat the various metal items I’ve been meaning to clean up. As you can see from the before-and-after pictures, where the rust wasn’t completely eliminated, it was certainly heavily reduced.5 stars.

Good Quality COMPOZIT Rust Converter! Easy to Use! No Harsh Smells!

Good Quality COMPOZIT Rust Converter! Easy to Use! No Harsh Smells! I used this on rusted trailer hitches, and it worked great! Every time I would clean them, within days the rust was coming back. I applied this almost two months ago, and still no rust. Just make sure you follow the instructions, including preparation. This is very watery, so applying with a brush is recommended. It covers a good bit of area, so I was able to do two coats on everything I used it on, and still have plenty left over. I really like that this is plant based, as I don't like using harsh chemicals. Each coat was completely dry within 15 minutes, so not a long wait to reapply. I would also recommend transferring some into a small container, with a larger opening, to dip a brush into. Overall I recommend this product!

Good for surface prep, just requires more elbow grease

Reviewed on May 1, 2026

This is a solid professional-grade prep tool. It doesn't eat through heavy scale like a dedicated industrial acid might, but for light to medium surface rust, it's perfect. The big win here is the lack of odor and the ease of cleanup since it's plant-based. I found that you definitely need to do your due diligence with a wire brush firstβ€”it won't do all the work for youβ€”but once applied, it creates a very stable surface for a topcoat. I docked a star because it takes a little longer to cure than the chemical-heavy stuff, but the results are worth the wait.

Water Thin but Effective for Light to Medium Rust

Reviewed on April 18, 2026

This plant-based rust converter from KOMPOSIT is an easy to use liquid product that can be brushed, rolled or sprayed onto rusted surfaces. I've used a variety of rust converters and they all work in a similar way by converting the visible rust (iron-oxide) into a stabilized black oxide that resists further rusting and provides a more stable surface that is ready for primer. I ordered the 32oz bottle which has a stated coverage of up to 300sqft. The liquid is very thin, like water and looks a lot like strong black coffee. It's very easy to apply to flat surfaces but tends to run off vertical surfaces too easily, which is where gel products have an advantage. Where it remains coated, it will turn the rust into a dark, almost black color to let you know it has converted the rust. Like most products, it's essential to clean and remove any loose rust before applying to help provide a stable surface for painting. I used a wire brush to remove any loose material from an old truck frame and also washed the surface with detergent to remove any trace of grease, or anything else that might prevent the solution from penetrating the rust. If there's any paint or coatings left on the metal, this will have little to no effect on rust if it can't make direct contact. The conversion also didn't seem as effective the first time on vertical surfaces but you can always apply a second or third coat to get better penetration before it's fully dry. At $19, it is a little pricier than some other rust converters out there but this one has the benefit of being plant-based and somewhat more eco-friendly and safer to use. It also has a very low odor which makes it easier to work with inside. It works fairly quickly and you can see the effects as the rust changes color. Overall I'd give this four stars as a little more effort is required applying this to vertical surfaces.

I ordered this believing it was a product that would remove rust from objects. It is actually a product that is supposed to bond with rust to form a barrier. According to the instructions, this product will combine with rust on a vehicle and harden into a barrier that can be sanded and painted. I have not had the chance to try this out yet. I think that this is a product that could be extremely useful for someone that work with rusted vehicles.

This rust converter is seriously impressive! The plant-based formula is a huge plusβ€”it feels great knowing I'm using something effective without the harsh chemicals. It goes on smoothly and starts working quickly, transforming rusted surfaces into a solid, paintable base. The protection it provides is top-notch. After application, the metal looks clean and well-prepped, and you can tell it's sealed against further corrosion. It's truly industrial-grade performance in an easy, ready-to-use formulaβ€”no complicated mixing or prep required. I've used it on a few different projects now, and the results have been consistently excellent every time. If you're looking for a reliable, eco-friendlier way to tackle rust and extend the life of your metal surfaces, this is definitely the one to get!

Thin

Reviewed on April 8, 2026 Β· on Amazon

I used this rust converter to treat some rusty rocker panels prior to capping them. I've used various other rust converter products before. This one is thin enough that it could be sprayed if needed. It tends to penetrate deep rust better than the thicker products, but it also drips off easier. It takes some time to work, it does not give instant results. In my opinion this offers a temporary solution only. It does not remove rust. It does not prevent metal from rusting again. It is acid based which has it's own problems and causes adhesion issues for many top coatings. Use it carefully and know it's limitations, don't expect miracles.

Easy-to-use rust converter that preps metal for paint and slows future corrosion

Reviewed on March 28, 2026

This rust converter has been a straightforward way to deal with surface rust on metal before painting instead of grinding everything down to bare shiny steel. The ready-to-use formula makes it simple: wire-brush or sand loose rust, wipe things clean, then brush or roll this on and let it react. It dries to a more stable, primed-looking surface that takes paint better and gives some peace of mind that the rust underneath isn't just going to keep spreading. The plant-based, low-odor formula is a plus if you're working in a garage or smaller space and don't want to deal with harsh solvent fumes. I've used it on things like outdoor furniture, small trailer spots, and metal railings, and it's helped extend the life of pieces that would otherwise keep flaking. One quart goes a long way for small to medium projects, especially if you're just hitting spots and seams instead of entire panels. For the price, it's a handy prep step that makes paint jobs last longer and slows that creeping rust from coming right back through.

Definitely strong at eating rust away

Reviewed on March 24, 2026

I use this to spray on an old vise I'm restoring to cut through all the rust build up on it and it did not disappoint. It eats through it quickly and I did have to do multiple applications because it was fairly thick and used a brush to help it out. But it got every bit of the rust off and even what little bit of paint was still left as well. Left the surface ready for wire wheeling and prepping for paint. Make sure you're definitely wearing protective gloves and goggles as this stuff will burn you.

Works well but takes a while to work

Reviewed on March 10, 2026

The lintels above a few of my windows had started to rust, and I wanted to get ahead of it before it became a bigger problem. Since I was only dealing with a handful of spots, the one-quart size was the right call. It covers up to 300 square feet, which was more than enough for my needs without buying more than I'd ever use. Before applying anything, I chucked a wire brush into my drill and worked the surfaces down as well as I could to remove any loose rust and debris. Prep work really does matter with a product like this, and I'd recommend not skipping it. Application was straightforward and smooth with a standard paintbrush, and the formula goes on easily without any strong smell or fumes, which was nice since I was working close to the house. It's not a fast process. The converter takes its time doing its thing, but it does get there. Once fully dry, it leaves behind a dark, solid primer layer that's ready to paint over directly. For the price and the quantity you get, it's a decent value and a practical solution for targeted rust treatment.

Review for KOMPOZIT Rust Converter 'Paint': I got this to do R&R on some simulated wrought-iron railing (actually steel) on our front porch that's badly in need of a refresh. Unfortunately, so far winter weather is hanging on too long for me to get a quick review here! I've tested this on a smaller project in my basement, but won't be able to weather-test anything until it warms up a bit. Handling and applying is easy, and not markedly different than similar products I've used before. Just from my small project, I think I'll be able to treat all of the railing in my project with this one bottle: about 8 running feet waist-high railing & 4 8' uprights. (I don't have to coat every inch-- just the parts suffering from rust.)

GOOD FOR MY RUSTORATION PROJECT

Reviewed on February 22, 2026

I put this rust converter to work on a few metal pieces in my garage that had been slowly turning into archaeological artifacts. After knocking off the loose rust, I brushed on a thin coat and let it sit while I handled other chores. A couple hours later, the surface had shifted to that dark, stable finish that tells you the chemistry actually did its job. What stood out immediately was how easy it was to work with β€” no harsh fumes, no burning eyes, no feeling like I needed to air out the whole garage afterward. It behaved more like a practical workshop product than a chemical hazard, which I appreciated. Over the next day, the treated areas dried into a solid, paint-ready surface that felt consistent and reliable. I've used harsher converters in the past that worked fast but made the whole space smell like a science experiment gone wrong. This one took its time, but the finish was clean and even, and it didn't irritate my skin when I inevitably got some on my fingers. For tools, brackets, and the random metal odds and ends that accumulate over the years, this has been a simple, low-stress way to stop rust from spreading and get everything back into usable shape.

It works!

Reviewed on February 19, 2026

I used this to coat some tools that had become incredibly rusty. I washed them and scrubbed the surface rust, then dried them completely. When they were absolutely dry, I poured some KOMPOZIT rust converter into a disposable dish and painted it on the entirety of the tools. It doesn't seem to smell horrible (I've used very strong acid rust converters that took my breath away). It also didn't seem to bother my skin, but I didn't get it on my hands. I left the coated tools for about 4 hours while I went out to run errands. When I got back, the rust had been transformed into a black surface. I was able to paint everything with a rust preventative paint. It works as well as other rust converters I have used with far less hazardous chemical smells. A thin coating was all that was needed to convert the rust. This bottle was a lot larger than I had expected and will last a while for coating various rusty surfaces around my garage.

Does the job, but very expensive vs. the competition

Reviewed on February 19, 2026

This rust converter does a nice job overall, but there are a couple of things that leave me with a score of 4 stars vs. 5. As mentioned in other reviews, it is VERY slow working. That's not horrible, and in fact it is similar to Evaporust for how long it takes to work. It is expensive compared to the competition I just mentioned. A gallon of the competitor is just a few bucks more than the quart of this. On the positive side, I find that it works, albeit slowly. It also leaves a nice primer type surface where it was used and where it was rusty, but unlike others, it does not prep the unrusted metal with a paintable coating from what I saw on the couple pieces I tried it on. I like that it is very easy to use. You will need a small paint brush or a spray bottle to apply, and if you spray it, go over it with the brush to ensure it gets in all the nooks and crannies. All in all I like this rust converter, BUT for the money, I think there are others that are as good or better, and at a more competitive price point. If you're a Made in the USA person, this is your product. It is also perfect for you if you don't want or need the gallon size.

It works without the smell or contact concerns

Reviewed on February 17, 2026

I have been looking for different types of rust removers and have so far tried five other ones from local department stores, each with different active ingredients, and some more risky than others to my skin and to the environment potentially. So when I found this one I was eager to give it a try since it sounded very effective and more gentle than most. With living in hot and humid Florida and trying to run a farm, we have a lot of different metal items in high rain conditions most of the year, so rust is so common daily situation to contend with. If it was just a normal city residence it maybe wouldn't be as necessary for this degree if research and precaution, but we are volume users with a high frequency of interaction so we're always looking for better solutions. I just tested this on a piece of fence and followed the directions and it worked like a charm! It's definitely a legit product with a good formula and I like that it doesn't smell horribly like most alternatives do. I saw it say low odor in the listing and I honestly didn't believe it. It also didn't irritate my finger because no matter how experienced and slow I go, I'll always get everything on myself somehow lol. That's why I was looking forward to this plant based alternative. It seemed to provide similar specs but lower long term usage stress. I'll continue testing this on more rusty metal around the property and see if repeated skin contact presents any issues and report back if there are. But so far I'm impressed and optimistic that we have finally found our preferred something out here.

Rust thought it had squatters' rights. It was out here spreading, staining, making my equipment look like it had been abandoned since 1973. Enter this plant-based metal surface prep like, "Oh sweetie… no." Application was easyβ€”no complicated mixing, no drama. Just brush it on and watch rust get evicted. It chemically transforms that crunchy orange nonsense into a stable, paintable surface. It's basically a courtroom drama where rust loses every case. I also appreciate made in the USA and that it's plant-based. So while it's absolutely savage toward corrosion, it's not trying to gas the entire neighborhood while doing it. Industrial-grade results without feeling like I need a hazmat team on standby. After treatment, the metal looked ready for primer and paint, and most importantly, rust looked - well it looked GONE. If you have metal that's been personally victimized by oxidation, buy this. Rust had a good run. Not anymore.
